Here’s a completely charming, easy-to-put-together baby shower theme for a lazy summer day spent honoring the new mom-to-be.

This garden theme pulls together everything we love about summer: fresh fruit, iced teas and lemonade, and lots and lots of garden flowers. Adding to the fun is a few funky prints (what could be more baby-friendly than polka dots?)  and that ultimate icon of summer, the sunflower.

To set this up, just lay some picnic tables with fresh white linen or gingham. Fill a galvanized tub full of ice and refreshing “-ades” (lemonade, limeade) in glass bottles. Homemade peach ice cream would make Martha swoon and get your guests talking for months. A scooped-out watermelon rind is an impressive accent that needs only the tiniest crafty gene.

Tap your local baker for some adorable cupcakes (impressive, and a big savings over a fondant cake), and lean on your friends for armfuls of  backyard flowers — whatever’s in bloom right now, whether it’s lilacs, peonies or lilies. Set these in pretty galvanized buckets, watering cans or milk cans.

You can give run-of-the-mill plastic glasses a couture look by sticking on a small label with mom’s initial. Sweet! And if you’re lacking silver for so many guests, a stylish set of black plastic is a subtle complement to your ladybug motif.

Finally, give your food and flowers a big dose of style by playing with heights: a jaunty cupcakes stand makes a big impression (you can always make your own from plates and glasses, then spray-paint the whole thing a cheery red). Wrap smaller vases and containers with a red & white striped paper.

Don’t forget to set out a memory book to record the day (Polaroid shots would be lots of fun).  How amazed will mom be by all this inventiveness you’ve lavished on her party? Pretty darn amazed, we think.
